Bliss for someone who likes to understand how things work, and not just that they do. Not like MS who try to insulate you from the internal workings. And everything is exposed if you want to look hard enough. So many useful system tools are built in that you would have to install 3rd party stuff for in Windows.
One thing I'm really liking about Linux is how accessible its innards are. I'm in a similar situation to you except I've already jumped the fence.
Other management tools you might like to investigate would be Puppet, Chef and Ansible for automation/configuration management. A useful behemoth, but it would take a lot of time to fully replicate all of its features in Linux. However, realistically AD has had Microsoft behind it and they have created something of a behemoth. So anything that can do LDAP should be able to replicate AD. LDAP being Lightweight Directory Access Protocol.
